There are many overdrive pedals on the market, but none of them have been quite right, preserving the tone of the guitar and adding the right amount of overdrive without compromise.

There are some newer OD pedals that have a great frequency response, but to me they sound too DRY, a bit sterile and cardboardy. There are also some nice sounding pedals available but their sound is too "saturated", losing the touch and feel of your guitar. That is where the King Of Tone pedal comes in - it has enough warm overdrive but still preserves the tones of your quality guitars and amps. If you are looking for a big change in your sound, or a lot of distortion, this is probably not the pedal for you.
Jim likes the tone of his TS, but has always found it loses some low end and is a bit too heavy in the mids. But sometimes I have wished for a less compressed, more open and natural sound with more of the guitar's actual tone, or as Jim says "you can hear the note better". A Tube Screamer makes it easier to play and sound good due to the compression and vocal midrange boost, but a master player like Jim would often prefer less coloration to allow his techniques and superb tone to get through.
A good friend of ours suggested the old Marshall Blues breaker pedal might work for Jim, so we found one on ebay and I had it sent to Jim who said it was pretty good. So I got another one on ebay and modified it quickly with some improved parts for a baseline test.
I brought it up to Woodstock and Jim's sounded better, I was surprised! Then I opened Jim's up and saw that it was already modified heavily!! I thought he was playing a joke on me, but he just laughed, someone sold it on eBay like that. I tried those mods but didn't like them much, so we totally redid the circuit with different diodes, chips, capacitors, treble boost, modes- pretty much everything was changed. And of course the KOT is two pedal circuits in one box.
Especially the clean or distortion modes are different, and the higher gain option changes it even more, making it more useful throughout the DRIVE knob range.

The King Of Tone overdrive was designed to take an amp at reasonable settings, and make it sound like it would sound if it were naturally driven to pure, smooth, tube distortion.
It was fine tuned with Jim's s Fender Deluxe Reverb amp to duplicate the sound when his amp is singing, but at lower volume settings - to simulate the natural tube amp distortion of preamp and power tubes.

It is to the King of Tone what the Soul Food is to the Klon: a much cheaper, short cut way of getting into the ballpark without being any kind of an actual clone. The King of Tone has a ton of flexibility in 3 settings from boost to OD to distortion, and internal trim pots, on both sides.
Hi Sarah, where did you learn so much about the history of pedals and which copied which? Just a quick note about the Klon. It's actually an overdrive not a distortion. It's great when the comment section becomes a better read than the article it's posted on! I have never heard anyone say that the DOD and the Klon are similar circuits outside their basic operation let alone that the Klon is a mod of the DOD.
Do you have any verifiable source for this information other than your cousin? I have read up. A car is a modified motor cycle arguably. But it's also very much arguably not. What you're describing is the difference between a Harley and a Hyundai. Sure, operatively they both share a lot because they both of combustion engines fueled by gasoline. But that doesn't make one a "mod" of the other. Do you have an actual article or something you could cite showing that Bill Finnegan and co were working from a DOD or that the circuits are similar in any meaningful way other than that they are both overdrive circuits?
I mention the King of Tone to point to what a "moddified" version is. You take a DOD on the other hand and you can flip minor components all day but you'll never have a Klon from that. No, it's not just semantics.

Chorus, flanger and phaser pedals are all LFO-based effects, which explains some of the confusion they can cause. The difference between them is a combination of delay line time and what the LFO is used for.
On the flanger, a delay line of roughly ms, controlled by an LFO is mixed with the dry signal. Originally, the effect was created in a much more DIY way — by running two tape machines in parallel and then putting a finger on one of the tapes to forcibly slow it down. By then recombining the two signals, you were able to achieve the distinctive flanging sound heard on Jimi Hendrix's records, for example. Nowadays, most flangers either use digital chips to create their delay lines, but there are some that specifically aim to emulate that classic tape flange, and its distinctive character.
In terms of deciding between flangers, they have different amounts of feedback and different ranges; some even drift into chorus territory at longer delay times. Moreover, these differences result in distinctive timbres, with some more subtle and others — like the so-called 'jet' flanging tone — anything but. Picking the best flanger pedal, then, is usually a case of checking whether there are any unique features that are on your checklist, and then moving straight on to deciding whether the voicing resonates with you.

In terms of sounds, it's very flexible, with everything from the smooth Electric Mistress tone to the jet plane flange of the MXR and modern Boss units available. In practice, it sounds best when trying to emulate more modern tones, and this also plays to the strengths of its many options — stereo spread, step rate and waveform among them.
The MD has a few more tricks up its sleeve too, with various rhythmic modulation options including some of the presets from oddball units like the Boss Slicer, so you've got a lot of additional inspiring sounds to choose from besides the flanger. Mini pedals are easy to love, thanks to their small form factor and affordability — a win-win.
In the case of the Vortex, the mini size means sacrificing the three-way control and excellent tape mode of the larger model, although it is still toneprint compatible, giving you access to many more presets via the toneprint software.
Perhaps the biggest drawback versus the larger Vortex is stereo capability. It's not the sort of thing you'll want to use all the time, but it can be the difference between a head-turning guitar part and something a lot more pedestrian. If those aren't dealbreakers, however, then the Mini is a highly capable and solid-sounding flanger pedal.
Although there's a lot of controls and modes to get to grips with, the jumping-off point for the F is a solid flange sound that's warm, and less 'jet-like' and aggressive at first blush than something like the Boss BF The Mobius has 12 modulation modes and space for presets, and, although only one of those is the flanger, there are a number of sub-modes to that patch, including a classic voicing, a through-zero positive, and through-zero negative mode. What this means in practice is there are models for the classic Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress and MXR sounds, as well as more extreme and experimental through-zero style sounds.
Although it's a large footprint for a pedal and a hefty price tag, this level of flexibility carries over to its other 11 modes, so if you want a swiss-army knife, studio-grade modulation station, then look no further.
