After the events of the Spellplaguehe was an exarch of Silvanus. At some point in the s DRPasha Abon Duum of Manshaka had fortuitously been granted guardianship of the kittenlordheir to the power of the cat lorda minor power of felines.

However, Duum desired to corrupt and dominate the child, and therefore made a deal with the mightier power Malar to keep the vengeful old Catlord off his back. Duum wished to use the cat lord's power of planar travel to journey into the Outer Planes and, using the Claw of Malareven challenge Tyrgod of justice, and gain awesome power.

In exchange, when he was done with the boy, Duum would give him to the Beastlord. Learning of Duum's wicked intentions for the boy, the Catlord came and rescued him, but Malar pounced upon the Catlord as he fled. The Catlord and Malar battled for three days and three nights, before the Catlord escaped, and it was a year before his wounds even healed.

The scars would not. Malar was one of the Deities of Furyled by Talos.

He held a long-standing alliance with Lolth against the Seldarineand other dark deities like Bane and Loviatar. He fought against deities of peace, civilization, and nature, but held particular hate for Nobanion for defeating him in a battle during the Time of Troubles. After the events of the Spellplague, Malar became subject to Silvanus' rule as a resident of the Deep Wilds. Despite this, Silvanus did not rein in Malar. Malarites believed that it was an honor to Malar to make one's killing bloody and long.

His followers sometimes formed in bands, called "Hunts". While forbidden to slay the young or the pregnant, Hunts typically followed his dogma and evoked wanton slaughter in Malar's name.

Peryton (Dungeons & Dragons)

Malarites were generally frowned upon by civilization, as they tended to wreak havoc in their wake. One exception where the worship of Malar was allowed was in Cormyr. One of the most respected servants of Malar was Garmos Saernclawswho was responsible for the gospel of Saernclaws by which all priests of Malar were bound, ensuring that hunts remained clean and poison-free.

The High Hunt ritual was a vicious hunt in which a captured humanoid was released, and for the next day and night attempted to escape the prowling worshipers of the Beastlord. If they managed to survive, they won their freedom as well as, perhaps, other things.

The Feast of the Stags day made Malar's worship more tolerable in certain areas. For this event, all people were invited to partake of the bounty of the hunt, regardless of faith.

At this time, priests of Malar chose some widows, orphans, elderly, or infirm citizens and promised to provide meat for their tables for the winter. Malar was first created by Ed Greenwoodmentioned in the "Down-to-earth divinity" article of Dragon magazine 54 Octoberpg Sign In Don't have an account? Start a Wiki. Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. Though vicious beasts, perytons possess all the intelligence of a human. Perytons loathe all other creatures, even their own kind, and adult male perytons often attack one another on sight. However, strong females sometimes lead small family flocks composed of the alpha female, two or three weaker females, and up to six fledglings.

The flock drives off males when they come of age, but females are allowed to join the pack when they mature, provided they swear allegiance to the alpha female. Unpaired males frequently attack such flocks in the hope of making off with a mate; failing that, they approach more peacefully, with offers of warm humanoid hearts or even still-living victims to attract females.

Perytons mate once per year. The mating ritual is short, brutal, and in the end often fatal for the male. Afterward, the female lays a single, foot-tall black egg, which hatches 7 months later. Patreon Supporters. The peryton combines the body of a giant eagle five feet tall with a twenty-five-foot wingspan with the head of a powerful stag. Its skin is impervious to weapons that are not magically enchanted. Its body has dark green plumage and yellow talons. Its stag head is blue-black with pale orange eyes and glossy obisidian antlers. The peryton casts the shadow of a human rather than its own shadow most of the time, and smells like a human as well.

Perytons are evil creatures who roost atop high cliffs in dense forest. They create nests of 4 or so individuals which are completely independent of any other nests, and nests are never located closer together than few miles of one another except under special circumstances, such as a particularily prominent hunting ground. Perytons need to eat human or humanoid hearts to survive, and females need them to reproduce, and they hunt such beings accordingly.

Perytons have little desire other than to hunt and obtain the human hearts they need to survive. Every day, they try to make at least one kill. They attack by finding a human, tricking them with their human shadow, and then flying up extremely high and diving back down at lightning speed.

They grab the victim in their talons, carry them high up into the air again, and then rip out the heart from there. If they have eaten recently, they may carry the human back to the nest and keep it as a slave until its heart is needed. They will take any treasure the victim might have, and hoard it much the same way as dragons.

Perytons can only be harmed by magical weapons. Perytons are usually chaotic evil in alignment. Fandom may earn an affiliate commission on sales made from links on this page. Sign In Don't have an account?

If it's summoned by find greater steed does it reshape and become large, or stay medium size? Your summon a steed that takes on a form that you choose: griffon, pegasus, peryton, dire wolf, rhinoceros, or saber-toothed tiger. The steed has the statistics of the chosen form. Would the Peryton get all of the rules it normally has like the dive attack rules, the resistances, etc?. Size is one of the statistics of a monster. In fact, it's the first listed in the "Statistics" section in the intro to the Monster Manual.

Since the peryton has a size statistic of medium in its description, that's the size of the summoned steed when you choose that form. Note that non-greater, regular Find Steed also has medium-sized options pony and mastiff. Presumably these sizes are there to support small-sized paladins gnomes, halflings, etc.

Pathfinder

There is nothing in the spell that suggests that the mount resizes, and it specifically says the mount gets the features described in the peryton's description.

Furthermore, whatever the peryton's description says should apply to the summoned mount. You can decide it seems reasonable to you that the peryton would be large, and maybe that makes sense to you. Depending on your GM, it might or might not be true. The rules don't provide an answer other than a peryton is medium. A great way to find out is to discuss it with your GM and then try it.

To me, the rules say it's medium, then it's medium. So try it. Another fundamental rule is "rulings, not rules". The rules explicitly say the GM can interpret, change, or ignore the rules as he or she sees fit. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top.

The peryton was created and described by Jorge Luis Borges in his Book of Imaginary Beingsusing a supposedly long-lost medieval manuscript as a source. The peryton is said to have the head, neck, forelegs and antlers of a stagcombined with the plumage, wings and hindquarters of a large birdalthough some interpretations portray the peryton as a deer in all but coloration and bird's wings.

According to Borges, perytons lived in Atlantis until an earthquake destroyed the civilization and the creatures escaped by flight. A peryton casts the shadow of a man until it kills one during its lifetime, at which time it starts to cast its own shadow. A sibyl once prophesied that the perytons would lead to the downfall of Rome. In Borges' original Spanish edition, the word is given as peritio so the presumptive Latin original would be peritius, which happens to be the Latin name of the fourth month on the ancient Macedonian calendar [2] Peritiosmoon of January.

The connection of this, if any, to the peryton is unclear. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article needs additional citations for verification.
